February Is Going to Be BYU Men's Basketball's Month to Shine

While it should be noted that BYU incurred its first two-game losing streak after they lost to Gonzaga Saturday night, they are still a force to be reckoned with. Duo Elijah Bryant and Yoeli Childs are second and third, respectively, in West Coast Conference scoring. The team played well against Gonzaga, putting on a completely different show than the previous week’s loss to Loyola Marymount. Childs chalked up 14 points and collected 11 rebounds. Bryant didn’t fair so well, going 1 of 11 and 0 of 8 from 3-point range. BYU’s loss to Gonzaga put them on the upswing: It was a peek into how well they could play in February. They’re now in a positon similar to many previous seasons, fighting for a potential spot in the big dance.

Players to Watch

Bryant did have poor performance against Gonzaga. Putting that aside, he plays a good game of basketball and is doing consistently well this season. The Cougars will rely on him heavily in February.

Right on the heels of Bryant’s stellar season is Childs’ hard work and scoring abilities. It would be cool to see him be a bit more physical to finish out the season (can someone say charges?), while continuing to protect the rim.

Seems like eyes are always on TJ Haws. Fans are critical of him and often compare his high school career to his collegiate career. In recent weeks, he has stepped up his game, and he’s going to have to continue to step it up if he has any hopes of making it to March.

Then there’s Jahshire Hardnett; he’s as reliable as they come and often overlooked. Hardnett runs a tight ship on offense—he doesn’t really take chances—but he’s almost always taking and making reliable shots and passes.
